Here’s the hottest new about Ubuntu today if you haven’t already heard. Support for Ubuntu 10.04 and 11.10 along with 8.04 Server edition have reached their end of life. All version of 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) and 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot) and the server edition of 8.04 (Hardy Heron) will no longer receive updates and fixes from Canonical.
If you’re currently running Ubuntu 10.04 and 11.10 LTS, there’s a direct upgrade path to 12.04 LTS. It is highly recommended to upgrade to the latest version as support will end including fixes to close vulnerabilities. To upgrade, just open Update Manager and click the Upgrade button. If you don’t know how, the steps below will help you get there.
To get started with upgrading to Ubuntu 12.04 from 10.04 and 11.10, press Ctrl – Alt – T on your keyboard to open the terminal. When it opens, run the commands below to update your system first.
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
After that, you may have to restart your computer. When you log back in, go to System –> Administration –> Update Manager.
Finally, click the ‘Upgrade’ button to begin the upgrade. It may take a long time depending on the speed of your Internet Connections.
Your system will upgrade to 12.04 LTS version along with your documents and programs. Programs that are not supported will not work so be sure to take notes before upgrading.
