Today’s task will be how to automatically startup programs or packages everytime you login to your system. Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04 maybe different in many ways, but are almost similar in functions. Almost everything you do in Windows 7 can also be done in Ubuntu 12.04. And if you’re just starting out with Ubuntu, coming from Windows 7, this tutorial will also come in handy and give you a better understanding of Ubuntu.

How to Automatically Startup Programs in Windows 7

To auto start programs in Windows 7, click on Start –> All Programs –> and right-click on Startup, then select ‘Open’

Next, right-click a blank area and select ‘New –> Shortcut’

Then browse to the location where the program executable is. Select it and click ‘Next’

Finally, click Finish to complete the process.

You could also just Drag and Drop the executable of the program anywhere in the white area and it will work

 

 

How to Automatically Startup Programs in Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise Pangolin)

To auto start programs in Ubuntu, go to the ‘Control Gear –> Startup Applications…’

Next, click ‘Add’ then browse to the executable of the program. Select it and click ‘Add’

Things to remember:

  • Most programs executable live in /usr/bin folder in Ubuntu
  • In Windows, you can find programs executable in C:\Program Files or C:\Program Files(x86)
  • Use the Browse button to look for the programs you want to start automatically
  • Windows programs executable end with .exe
