Enable Automatic Guest Login in Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot)

Do you want to enable the guest account to automatically login when Ubuntu starts? Maybe you have a single public machine that you want all users to login as guest. It doesn’t also have to be a public machine. It could be a machine that a child uses to play games and browse the web. Remember now, the guest account can do no harm to your machine, because as the PC is restarted all changes made by the guest account will be reset.

This brief tutorial will show you how to make that happen.

Objectives:

  • Enable to guest account to automatically login to Ubuntu
  • Enjoy!

To get started, press Ctrl – Alt – T on your keyboard to open Terminal. When it opens, run the commands below to open lightdm config file.

sudo gedit /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf

auto_guest_login_oneiric

Finally, add these lines at the bottom of the file as shown and save.

allow-guest=true
autologin-guest=true
autologin-session=lightdm-autologin
autologin-user-timeout=0

auto_guest_login_oneiric_1

Restart your computer to test.

Enjoy!
