How to Install and Use RadioTray in Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot)

Are you looking for a simple-to-use online radio streamer in Ubuntu? If so, then look no further than RadioTray. Radio Tray runs on the system tray in Ubuntu with minimum footprint and with only one goal – to stream online radios from your desktop in Linux, including Ubuntu.

This tutorial shows you how to install RadioTray in Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot) if you haven’t already done so. This is not a full featured music player, it just streams Internet radios. It also allows you to add your own station as well.

 

Objectives:

  • Install RadioTray in Ubuntu 11.10
  • Install Gstreamer tools
  • Play Internet radios

To get station press Ctrl – Alt – T to open Terminal. When Terminal opens, run the commands below to install RadioTray.

sudo apt-get install radiotray

After installing, launch ‘Dash’ and open RadioTray.

When prompted with the screen below, choose ‘App Indicator’ click ‘OK’

Radio Tray should appear on the system tray shown below.

When you get error ‘Gstreamer installation is missing plug-ins’ run the command below to fix it.

sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly

That’s all to it. To add your own station, click ‘Radio Tray’ from system tray and select ‘Preferences’.

From there you can add the station name and link to the station.
