Return to Ubuntu Classic Desktop in Ubuntu 11.10
This tutorial shows you how to install and use Ubuntu Classic Desktop (Gnome) in Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot. Ubuntu 11.10 will automatically use Unity as its default session and fall back to Unity 2D for those whose laptops do not support 3D graphic controllers. But if you truly want to go back to Ubuntu Classic Desktop without Unity, then this tutorial will show you show you how to do it easily.
Getting started:
To get started, press Ctrl – Alt – T to open Terminal. When terminal opens, type the commands below to install Gnome Session Fallback.
sudo apt-get install gnome-session-fallback
After installing, restart or logout and choose Gnome Classic Desktop.
Enjoy!
That’s all to it. Enjoy your classic session.

Unfortunately gnome-fallback-session is another ‘take-it-or-leave’ POS as there is no option to move panels.
For those that objected to Unity because the launcher could not be moved (to the bottom of the screen) then here is a double dose as the much vaunted fallback is just as unconfigurable.
Points to the devs for including a fallback but, hey, what planet are they on to not have noted users concerns as to the immovability of panels.
Many users would have been more than happy to move to Unity and leave Gnome classic if they could have configured it for their traditional user-space.
To find at the 11th hour that the fallback is just as locked down as Unity is a very bad joke.
OOps, apologies to the wonderous devs !!
It is configurable !!!!
but you have to press Alt and then right click to get the menus ……
I hereby rescind my previous scathing post and bow down in appreciation….!
