This brief tutorial will show you how to install and use Gnome Shell in Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick. As you may already know, Gnome Shell is the updated version of the Gnome Desktop in Ubuntu. It is currently being developed and will offer new paradigms for launching applications, opening documents and organizing open windows in GNOME.
Getting started:
To get started, go to Applications –> Ubuntu Software Center.
Then search for and install ‘Gnome Shell’.
Gnome Shell
![]()
After installing, press Alt-F2 on your keyboard, then type the command below:
gconf-editor
Then navigate to Desktop –> gnome –> session –> required components, right-click ‘windowmanger’ and select ‘Edit Key..’
desktop --> gnome --> session --> required components
Change the value to gnome-shell
gnome-shell
Restart your computer.
Enjoy!

I didn’t care for Gnome Shell and had to revert back to Compiz. I think there’s some serious compatibility issues, at least on my system. (I have tons of resources and a real vid card though.)
