This quick tutorial will guide you in installing Sun Java (JRE) plugin in Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat. Because Sun Java Runtime is not yet in Maverick’s repository, you must temporarily use Lucid repository to install Java Runtime. After installing Java, you must then remove the temporary repository you added.
Update: Sun Java Runtime is now available in Maverick’s Repository. Read this to install Java properly in Maverick.
Getting started:
To get started, go to Applications –> Ubuntu Software Center.
Then click Edit –> Software Sources..
Next, select ‘Other Software’ tab, then ‘Add’
Because Java Runtime is not yet in Maverick, we’ll install Lucid repository temporarily to install Java. Copy and paste the Lucid repository below and click ‘Add Source’

Notice the new Lucid partner repositories added below.
Back in Software Center, type sun-java6-jre in the search box, then select and install Sun Java:
sun-java6-jre
After installing, go back and remove repositories you added previously.
Enjoy!
