How To Disable/Turnoff Startup or Booting Sound in Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx

Have you ever wanted to disable the logon sound in Ubuntu? If so, this tutorial will show you how to do it in Ubuntu Lucid or Maverick. This tutorial will be short and easy, and will allow you to login to Ubuntu without sounds. If you want to enable sounds, then do the reverse.

 

Getting started:

 

To get started, go to System –> Preferences –> Startup Applications.

Then select ‘GNOME Login Sound’ and uncheck it. Click Close when done.

After that, go to System –> Administration –> Login Screen.

Click ‘Unlock’

Uncheck the box, ‘Play login sound’ and close out.

    Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat had the “Play login sound” preference unchecked, but the sound at startup always played, so I checked it then saved then unchecked it and saved and now the sound finalliy is gone.

    the secret is to unlock the Login Screen settings, check ‘play startup sound’ press close, re-open Login Screen settings, unlock and uncheck ‘play startup sound’ press close and kaboom! no drum beat
