This is part of our new series where we introduced beginners to Linux and Windows systems. Today we’ll continue with Fedora Linux and show you how to configure a basic Fedora system.
Fedora Linux has a long history. It was developed by community-supported Fedora Project with the backing of Red Hat Linux. It is based on Red Hat Linux with hundreds of developers who are dedicated to making its version of Linux the operating system the best.
In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to configure a basic Fedora Linux System. This tutorial will focus on updating Fedora, managing user accounts, and changing the background and themes.

Updating Fedora System:
The first thing you’ll want to do after installing any operating system is update it with the latest security patches and software. Fedora is no different. To update your system, click System –> Administration –> Software Update
By default all the packages will be selected. To install the updates, click Install Updates button.
Managing User Account:
Another task common to PC users is managing user accounts. If the system is going to be used by more than one users, managing user accounts will be something you’ll have to do.
To manager user accounts, click System –> Administration –> Users and Groups
To add new users to the system, click Add User button.
Enter the username and password for the account. The Login Shell should be left alone. The Home Directory can be changed, but it is recommended that you accept the default. Once done, click OK.
To manage the user account, select the user from the list and click Properties.
You can enable account expiration by enabling it here and setting the date it expires. Account can also be locked here.

In the Groups section, click to add the user to any group below. Any group the user is a member of gives the user the rights to perform tasks the group can do.
Changing desktop background/theme:
If you don’t like the default background on your system, you can replace it. You can also replace the default theme that came with your system.
To replace the background and theme, click System –> Preferences –> Appearance
Choose one of the themes from below or install a new one.
Select of the background images from the set below as your background image. Once done, click close.
Your new background.
That’s how you setup those basic settings in Fedora. We’ll look at more advanced settings later.
