This brief tutorial will show you how to upgrade to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Beta 1 with easy, but it is highly recommended that you do not upgrade a production system since software in beta states are not fully tested.
The final stable version will be released on April 29, 2010. If you still want to go ahead with the upgrade, then continue below.
Upgrading your system:
Type Alt-F2 on your keyboard to bring up the command prompt and type the command below:
update-manager -d
Click the Upgrade button to begin the process
Read the upgrade release note, then click Upgrade
Enter your password and continue
Support for some applications will end. Go over the applications and when you’re pleased, click Close.
Click Start Upgrade button to start upgrading your system.
Wait for the upgrade to complete. This may take up to 30 minutes.
Remote obsolete packages from your system.
Restart and enjoy your new system.
Ubuntu is restarting
Login and you’re done.

This does not work for me. I was able to use your method to upgrade from Karmic to Lucid alpha 3, but it doesn’t work. It comes up with updates, but does not say a new version of Ubuntu is available.
Click System –> Administration –> Update Manager, then click Settings. On the Updates tab, make sure it set to Normal Releases from the Release Upgrade options below.
Then try again.
