Browse Securely Online With OpenDNS

This tutorial will show you how to use OpenDNS to protect your computers online easily and for free. OpenDNS is a globally-distributed Domain Name System (DNS), web content filtering system, and typo-correction infrastructure that allows you to browse the web securely, reliably and with ease.

 

The way OpenDNS works is simple. When you configure your systems to use OpenDNS’ infrastructure, all your DNS queries will pass through it’s web filtering system and only direct you to legitimate websites.

If you miss-type a legitimate websites’ URL, OpenDNS systems will prevent you going to a possible infected sites and suggest the right URL to you.

 

Getting Started:

To use OpenDNS secure infrastructure, you must register online for a free account. To register, click here.

 

After registering, click here to download and install the client-side dynamic IP updater for your system.

Click Install to install the program.

Click Finish.

When OpenDNS Updater opens, enter your username and password and click Sign In.

Next, click Start –> and type ‘Network and Sharing Center’ in the search box and select the program at the top.

Click Manager network connections

Right-click ‘Local Area Connection’ and select Properties.

Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and click Properties.

Choose Use the following DNS server addresses: and type in the following IP addresses:

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

Close out and you’re done.

Go to OpenDNS’ site and login, then click settings and select your IP address to choose your filter level. There are different levels of filtering, from High to None, and Custom. Choose the one the applies to you.

Next, click Security from the menu on the left and enable malware/phishing protection.

When a site has an inappropriate content, OpenDNS will block the domain.
